Jess Jessup entered the house and dropped his bag on the floor just inside the door, tired after the long flight back from Chicago. Yawning and rubbing his neck, he was debating shower or dinner first when he noticed the black haired beauty curled up on his sofa, looking good enough to eat in a black silk tank top, leather pants, and four inch stilettos. Only Melanie would relax around the house in killer heels that probably cost more than he used to make in a month as a cop! She was absorbed in a novel.

She looked up with a sexy smile, "Hey, baby. Tomorrow was too long to wait to see you. I hope you don't mind that I let myself in."

"Hardly!" he grinned. "Nothing could please me more." He made a quick stop in his bedroom to hide the small blue box he had in his pocket, detoured through the kitchen to grab an apple then joined her in the living room. He had been hoping she'd be here when he got home, but her work schedule had been as bad as his lately and his flight had been delayed, so he hadn't been counting on it.

"Missed you," he said in that deep voice that always made her melt. He leaned down to give her a soft, lingering kiss then sat next to her, nuzzling her neck before tucking her under his arm and propping his feet on the coffee table. He groaned in contentment as he kicked off his shoes and loosened his tie. "So, what did you do while I was away?"

"I took my nieces to the zoo this afternoon," Melanie replied with a smile. "I don't know how their mother keeps up with them 24/7! They wore me out. I had to practically drag them out of the capybara exhibit. The zoo was about to close and I didn't want to spend the night with those creepy things! Why can't they get obsessed about something cute?"

"Better you than me! I hate rodents," Jess said with a mock shudder. "Whatchya reading?"

"Smut!" She said with an evil grin. "You got home just in time, I was getting lonely. Too bad you look dead on your feet."

"Give me ten minutes, I'll be good as new," Jess chuckled and closed his eyes, scooting deeper into the sofa, munching his apple. It felt good to be home and even better to have Melanie here waiting for him and so at home in his house. He never thought he'd meet his soul mate, or that it would feel so good just to sit with her to unwind after a long day. Being in love felt damned good! If someone had told him just six months ago that he'd fall so hard or so fast, he would have laughed. Melanie had quickly become the center of his world and he was finding it hard to remember why he had ever tried so hard to avoid commitment.

Lazily, he opened one eye and admired her profile. He took in the silky dark hair cut in a sleek, stylish bob, the pert nose, the full lips he never tired of kissing. Oh yeah, he was definitely waking up! His eyes followed her smooth shoulder down her toned and tanned arm to the small, capable hand. He glanced at her book and a word jumped off the page. His eyes popped as he nearly choked on his bite of apple. "Mel, tell me a vi-jay-jay isn't what I think it is! Why are you reading that junk?"

Rolling her eyes, she replied, "Well, he's touching it with his 'hot throbbing manhood', so take a guess. It may be trash but it's fun. Besides, it gets me hot and bothered." She wiggled her hip playfully against his and added with a sassy smirk, "You got a problem with that?"

"Hell no, but how can you read that junk? What happened to the book you were reading with Jordan whatshisname, the dude with the black onyx panther? At least that one had a plot and real English."

"You mean Jordan Townsende?"

"Yeah, whatever. That one." He was idly doodling designs with his finger across the taut leather on her thigh, rapidly losing interest in the conversation.

Tongue firmly in her cheek and fighting the urge to laugh, she said, "Babe, that was Jason Fielding. Jordan is another book." The giggles started to escape. "Holy rusted metal, Batman, you've been reading my Judith McNaught novels!!" More giggles burst forth. "So, just how many have you read? Would you like to borrow Perfect next? Maybe Night Whispers? You'd like that one, it has a cop." She was laughing so hard she snarted.

It was Jess's turn to roll his eyes. "You're adorable, even when you pick on me and sound like one of my frat brothers." He said with mock severity, "Behave or I'll get my handcuffs out." He sat down the apple core, got to his feet, grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the bedroom.

"You turned them in with your badge when you left the police department," she said confidently.

"Did I, now?" He stopped next to the bed. Giving her a playful leer and pinning her hands behind her back, he kissed her chin then worked his way down the side of her neck and murmured, "Are you sure?" He pressed her into the bed, nudged the strap of her tank top out of his way, savored her familiar scent and continued a downward path with his hot, wet mouth while he held her wrists in a gentle manacle.

Suddenly, she felt something cold on her wrist and heard a snap. "Uh. Um, Jess?"

"You are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent." He pulled the tank lower, exposing her breast. "Moans don't count."

He feasted.

She moaned.

Afterward when they lay sated and still out of breath, Jess lifted up on an elbow and ran his finger down the inside of her arm and nibbled at her lips. She shivered. "Do you have any idea how deeply in love I am with you?" Jess whispered.

Tears welled in her chocolate eyes. She had to swallow before she could reply, "No one's ever said that to me before and meant it. God, Jess, I love you, too."

"I'm so glad," Jess kissed her softly then a roguish smile came over his face, "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

She laughed. "If you say so. I'm not going anywhere, do you think maybe you could unlock the cuffs now? And leave the key where I can see it, turnabout's fair play!"

When he released her wrist, she rubbed her hands together to get the circulation back. He took her hand in his, massaging from her elbow to her fingertips. She stopped and did a double take when she noticed the three carat marquis cut diamond solitaire on her finger. "Oh Jess!" she squealed and threw her arms around him.

He hugged her tightly then pulled back. His hand still in hers, he brought her fingers to his sensuous mouth, kissed her fingers gently just below the ring. "Marry me?"
